Rodger's
South African, English and Australian lifeblood gives a unique edge
to his style of percussion. Rodger has been performing as a percussionist
for 15 years. With the spirit of free form musical experimentation
Rodger has masterfully fused together simultaneously vibrational
didgeridoo with African and tribal rythms creating a driving world
dance cosmic sound. Rodger's unique style of percussion is sensual,
sexy and primal, pulsing with infectious jungle rhythms
In
Rodgers own words:
Being blessed with an Australian father and South African mother
I pursued a musical interest at an early age. Since arriving in
Australia I began realizing the mixture of my cultural background
and my unique style of percussion. I was very fortunate to have
some extremely talented mentors.
Keith Casey a well known percussionist gave me lessons in Noosa
Heads. I was so eager to be able to express myself through percussion.
I ended up not only being a student of Keith but his roadie which
I used to learn as much as I could. Soon after I met Jim Toomey
former drummer of the "Tourists" with Annie Lennox who
became a very close friend. I began playing music with him in his
group which gave me not only playing experience but confidence in
performing in front of an audience and got me out of my living room
practicing.
Living in South Africa I was surrounded by drums and rhythm. Johnny
Cleig from Juluka was a big influence. I was in awe of how he mixed
cultures together and his mastering of the Zulu language.
Now when I walk on stage and sit behind the drums something happens
which words just cant explain. Something takes over me. If you ask
me later what rhythm I was playing? tempo? I have no idea I play
from my heart and soul. I also know I'm not alone, my medicine man
is with me. I travel to a place where I just sit back and my arms
and feet do their own thing, I play from my soul, and afterwards
am exhausted but happy!
I feel blessed that I am fortunate as a musican to travel to different
places around Australia and the world and perform to amazing people
who really appreciated what I do. Thank you for all you support
and encouragement.
